A Flower and Houses on Stilts

During the Christmas vacation, I have been wanting to make some pictures to decorate our new place. I have been missing the Philippines lately, so I decided to paint things that reminded me of my childhood/hometown.

Ever since I saw a huge square painting in a store while shopping, I got really excited about making one too. So I bought a 30" x 30" canvas from my favorite art place. Since this one is huge, I wanted to give it an extra "bump" by using modeling paste to sculpt the picture.

I settled on making the Hibiscus, locally known as gumamela, since I grew up around these common but pretty flowers.

Halfway through.
The modeling paste isn't obvious in this picture but it is there.

Final product on my living room wall.

If you look closely you will see the bumps and grooves.

The next day I started on another project. At the request of my dear husband, I made a picture of houses on the ocean. This was a typical sight for him when he was on a mission there and I thought they were pretty cool and would make a great subject. This picture will end up in our dining area.

The white raised areas are made of modeling paste, which I sculpted in first before doing the colors.
Background came next.
(If you're a keen observer, you will see my dog in the background. He likes to lay down next to me while I work.)

I used dark browns for the forground.
Because it is a sunset scene, I didn't worry much about details.

The final product.
